Privacy policy.
Squirrel lets you label storage boxes with QR codes and keep a photo list of what's inside. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. Squirrel is run by Ludic (ludic.uk), who is the data controller for the information described here.
What we collect
- Account details — your email address, first name, optional last name and a hashed password (we never store the password itself).
- What you stash — photos you add, stash names and locations, and item titles and descriptions.
- Access requests — if you ask to see someone else's private stash, the name, email and message you send them.
- Server logs — IP address, device type and request times, kept for security and troubleshooting.
We don't collect your location, contacts or advertising identifiers. There are no ads and no third-party tracking or analytics in the app.
Camera and photos
The app uses your camera to scan labels and to photograph things you add to a stash. If you pick a photo from your library, only that photo is uploaded. Nothing is uploaded unless you add it to a stash.
Automatic titles (OpenAI)
If you turn on automatic titles, each photo you add is sent to OpenAI, L.L.C. so it can suggest a title and description for the item. The app asks before the first photo is sent, and you can turn this off at any time under Account in the app. With it off, photos stay on our servers only.
OpenAI processes these photos on our behalf under its API terms, which say API data isn't used to train its models and is kept for no more than 30 days for abuse monitoring. See OpenAI's privacy policy.
Why we use it
- To run the service you signed up for: show you what's in your boxes, search them, and share them when you choose (contract).
- To keep Squirrel secure and working (legitimate interests).
- To suggest titles with OpenAI, only if you've said yes (consent).
We don't sell your data or use it for advertising.
Who can see your stashes
Stashes are public by default: anyone holding the label (or its code) can see what's in the box. Private stashes are visible only to you and the people you approve.
Where it's kept and for how long
Your data is stored on our own servers and sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). We keep it until you delete it or delete your account. Photos you delete from a stash are hidden immediately and removed when you delete your account.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account in the app (Account → Delete account) or on the web at /delete-account. This permanently removes your account, every photo and item in your stashes, and any sharing you set up. Your labels keep working and can be claimed again as empty stashes.
Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or withdraw consent at any time. Email us at the address below. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Squirrel isn't aimed at children under 13 and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
